MY WINC WINE EXPERIENCE AND HOW YOU CAN SAVE $22 ON YOUR WINC WINE ORDER
If you're a wine lover, addict like me, let me let you in on a monthly wine club subscription that you may or may not have heard about. Winc is an online wine club site that offers 4 personalized wines each month. Bottles start at $13 each. Winc is not your traditional wine club: they are a direct-distribution global wine company that personalizes the entire wine experience, perfecting how wine is made, distributed, perceived and purchased via their Palate Profile quiz that recommends wine based on your unique tastes and enjoyed on behalf of a new generation of wine drinkers.
I received my 4 bottles of wine a few days ago and I must admit, Winc done a pretty good job of choosing 4 random flavors, based off the results of the quiz I took. I will have to say (and this should come to no shock if you know me) but the Merlot was my favorite...or was it the Rosa Obscura (red wine?) Either way, these were my two favorites! I don't drink white wine, not that I don't like it, but Merlot has always been my top pick. The Funk Zone was a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and two other white wines and I actually liked this wine. It was a little on the dry side, but that is how I like my wine. The Funk Zone bottle was a fun designed looking bottle, which made it the first one I opened.
The bottles came carefully well packaged in a box, that displays the company's name, Winc. I had a convenient handle at the top, easy for carrying around. Inside the box were the 4 bottles, nicely nestled under crate material. The selection I chose were 2 white and 2 reds. I can't tell you how eager I was to tear into each one, but being the more responsible and somewhat patient person I am...I decided to open two - just to compare Winc's red and white.
I really enjoyed taste testing each wine, comparing them to my normal brand. I hate to say this (or maybe I don't) but I really enjoyed Winc Wine better. Maybe it's the quality, as my normal brand is probably the cheapest you can get, so it does matter (and makes a difference) in what you purchase and sometimes paying just a little bit more, is worth having a wine you know you will always love and count on.
You can take your Personal Palate Quiz and find out which wines Winc choose for you. Remember...when you can receive $22 off your first subscription, just by being a new member. you can visit: www.trywinc.com/usfamilyguide to get started now!

HEALTHY EATING: A QUICK SNACK THAT IS GRAIN FREE
When 2018 started, I vowed that I would begin a healthy lifestyle: eating healthy, exercising, etc. Well...some of that has happened (I just can't make myself workout more than 15 min!) When it came to eating healthy, I think I do about 80% of that.
After joining a program that gave me personalized meal plans and recipes (This has made my life so much easier) I began losing weight - slowly - but at least I've lost and not gained. My downfall is salty foods and snacks, with crunch. I crave the salty goodness of crackers, grains and more, knowing that this is not healthy.
What is healthy, is this awesome snack that KitchFix has. It has a bit of sweetness, mixed with nutty goodness of almonds, cashews, walnuts, coconut chips, raisins and the list goes on. Not only does it satisfy my craving for something sweet and crunchy, it satisfies my salty cravings (this, by no means, is salty.) This snack, by KitchFix, is the Grain Free Paleo Granola.
KitchFix was awesome enough to send me two of their granola packs - Grain Free Paleo Granola in Honey Pecan and Grain Free Paleo Granola Original Mix. OMGoodness! This is the ultimate snack (or topping) for my breakfast or lunch meals! At first, I thought the Original Mix would be my favorite, only because it has the coconut chips and raisins....but then I tried the Honey Pecan. The Honey Pecan has these clusters of almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds and more, with a hint of honey flavor.
I'm still debating which is my favorite, but I can tell you this...I have used the Original Mix (coconut chips, raisins, almonds, sunflower seeds) as a topping for my chicken salad and it was amazing! That little bit of extra crunch makes it all better!
Here is a little more info about the two.
ORIGINAL MIX - (Almonds, Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Walnuts, Cashews,
Flax Seed, Unsweetened Coconut Chips, Maple Syrup, Coconut
Oil, Vanilla Extract, Cinnamon and Sea Salt)
- Crunchy, Nut-filled Grain-free granola with Coconut chips and Raisins
- Full of flavor, not fillers like oats and sugar
- Great for breakfast, as a topping on your smoothie bowl, or sprinkled on a salad
- Take it on the go as a satisfying snack!
Contains no GMO, No Fillers, Gluten Free and Paleo Friendly
HONEY PECAN - (Almonds, Sunflower Seeds, Pecans, Cashews, Honey, Maple Syrup,
Coconut Oil, Flax Seed, Vanilla Extract, Cinnamon and Sea Salt)
- Crunchy, roasted nuts with just a touch of honey and maple syrup for sweetness

SPICY RUB & SEASONINGS - WILD BOAR SWEET AND SASSY RED PEPPER
Tis the season to fire up the grill! Whether you are grilling ribs, steaks, chicken or whatever, you just cannot forget the spices! Everything I grill, has to be rubbed down with some sort of spice or seasoning, to bring out the flavor of what I am grilling. Even if you aren't a griller, you can still prepare your meats in the oven, with your favorite rubs.
The rub/seasoning shown here, is the Wild Boar Sweet and Sassy Red Pepper Rub by JuliasPantry Etsy shop. Let me tell ya...this stuff has some kick to it! It is definitely on the spicy side, but with a side note of sweetness. It's a brilliant red spice rub that just enhances the flavor of whatever you are grilling.
This spice rub is perfect for chicken, pork, ribs and steaks. Not only is this a great spice rub, but you can also turn this into a marinade or dip- three-in-one! This spice rub is All-Natural, fat free, gluten free and contains no MSG. I found, that it doesn't take much of this spice at all, to flavor and give your meats some heat! If you are not faint at heart and can handle the heat, go for it! I, on the other hand, used just enough to cover my ribs, but not to the extent where my ribs were smothered in this spice.
I also used this on my chicken (just a little) to give my baked chicken a different twist and taste. If you are looking for a spicy rub for your grilling meats, head on over to Julia's Pantry on Etsy and check out all the rubs and spices she has. You will find the Wild Boar Chillin Chipotle, Sweet N Sassy Red Pepper Sauce and Marinade, Sassy Crackers Seasoning Mixes in a variety of flavors, plus tons more!

Any chance I get, I love to visit Memphis, Tn. Memphis has tons of events, activities and a wide of variety to choose from. Memphis is well known for their BBQ, Blues and Jazz music as well as the home of the late Elvis Presley. I never tire of Memphis. They have some of the greatest food places around and I love just strolling down the infamous Beale Street, but we'll save the latter for another time.
While in Memphis this past weekend, I stopped by Kooky Canuck. If you've never visited Kooky Canuck, then you need to check them out. Kooky Canuck was featured on Man vs. Food in 2008, when it was previously known as The Bigfoot Lodge. Adam Richman, from Man vs. Food, attempted (and failed) the Kookamonga Challenge (previously the Bigfoot Challenge), which required him to eat a 10lb burger in under an hour.
First of all, I would instantly fail at this challenge, so no, I did not take on that challenge. I can barely finish a burger before getting stuffed to the point I can no longer eat anymore! But what I did order, was the Fish N Chips. I was also accompanied by my husband and son, who ordered the 6 oz. Great Maple Sirloin and Fish N Chips. Shawn had mentioned that the Fish N Chips were not your ordinary Captain D's battered fish. These are made with a New England style batter, where the fish is two generous fillets of cod hand dipped in an English beer batter.

GREAT MAPLE SIRLOIN STEAK WITH GREEN BEANS
While we were waiting on our food, I got to meet Shawn Danko, the owner of Kooky Canuck, as well as the General Manager, Terry Trim. Shawn had asked if I ordered any appetizers (which I hadn't) and he said he was bringing us some BBQ Pork Egg Rolls, that I had to try. He was right about I had to try these, because these were the best egg rolls ever! The wantons were fried to a perfect crisp and were filled with a sweet bbq pork filling that I couldn't get enough of! These were the bomb! I will definitely be trying these again!
BBQ PORK EGG ROLLS
AND THE LAST ONE!
Ok, Shawn...I've got to know how you make these! But, let's not forget the side items. I ordered the Cheesy Corn. I didn't know really what to expect...I thought maybe it was corn on the cob, with a cheesy sauce...but this was even better! Whole Kernel (or maybe cream style corn) meshed with a LOT of cheese sauce. This was totally something different and something I've never had, nor heard of, but was sure glad I tried it. YUMMO!
My son, who just normally just starts eating and who never comments or compliments (verbally, anyway) his food, instantly commented about his 6 oz. Great Maple Sirloin. He repeatedly kept saying how good his steak was and like a good mother that I am, I had to try it (hey! I'm not going to miss something my son says taste good!) He was right on the spot...this Great Maple Sirloin was awesome! It had a slight sweetness from the Maple Syrup flavoring and the steak was really tender. After a couple of bites of it, my son said, "Ok, that's enough!"
Kooky Canuck has tons of burgers and sandwiches to choose from with a wide variety of add ons. They also serve soups and salads, entrees, desserts and great tasting appetizers that you can't pass up (I'm coming back for more of those BBQ Pork Egg Rolls!)
Are you up for a challenge? Do you think you can win this challenge? If so, check out these 'Challenges"
I love the whole atmosphere and decor of Kooky Canuck. I can tell it's a favorite among the local (and tourists), as this place was packed by the time I got ready to leave. The food was served hot and the service was excellent. Dana, our waitress, was always nearby if we needed anything and was a very pleasant person to talk with. I would definitely recommend visiting Kooky Canuck if you've never ate here before...and DON'T FORGET TO TRY THE BBQ PORK EGG ROLLS!

GUS'S FRIED CHICKEN
Ok...who DOESN'T like fried chicken? If you are one to say you don't...you must be vegan, vegetarian or not into good southern fried foods! I get the whole diet thing. I also get that eating healthier is a big concern for a lot of us, but every once in a while, you just gotta splurge. And if you are going to splurge, why not try some good fried chicken?
I recently had the opportunity to visit Gus's Fried Chicken. Gus's Fried Chicken is located in downtown Memphis, Tn. They have 14 locations located in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kansas, Illinois, Texas, Georgia and Missouri. Gus's Fried Chicken is well known for their spicy fried chicken as well as the long lines from everyone wanting to try their chicken. The building, itself, is a small dive like place, but packs a ton of flavor in their foods.
They have different plate options, individual pieces, lots of side items to choose from and even family meals. One of the side items I've tried, was the mac n cheese. OMG! This mac n cheese was so cheesy! I didn't quite get how many cheeses or what cheeses were involved in making this dish, but let me tell you, this is one side item you will definitely want to try!
I was accompanied by my husband and my 23 year old son, who all chose the spicy chicken. Our appetizer was the fried pickles (spears), which I may add, is one of my favorites when it comes to appetizers. The fried pickles were fried to perfection, crispy on the outside, just the right amount of seasoning...and beware...THEY COME PIPING HOT!
Our waitress, Rere, was very knowledgeable in the menu and our food item choices. She checked on us several times to ensure our food was up to par, that everything was cooked the way we liked it. We also got to meet Amber, the manager for Gus's Fried Chicken, in Downtown Memphis. Very pleasant lady and so glad we met.
As I've mentioned earlier, this is a small building, but was, and is, always packed. People come from all over, just to try Gus's Fried Chicken. I had asked our waitress if she knew how they prepared the batter for the chicken (I really wanted to know how they got the spiciness to come through), all she could tell me, was that it is mixed into the batter (no luck in getting the secret recipe!)
The restaurant reminded me of a quaint blues type place with some Southern charm. It's not elegant or fancy on the inside, but I feel more at home in a more down-to-earth laid back restaurant. Eating with your hands is a must here. The only way to really enjoy your chicken, is to pick it up and start digging in! Oh, and if you haven't had their baked beans...well, you must give them a try. With a bit of thickness and sweetness, they are oh, so good!
ABOUT GUS'S FRIED CHICKEN
The “Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken” recipe is a closely-guarded family secret. Once upon a time, Saveur Magazine asked Gus himself for the recipe. His response? “I ain’t telling!” And neither are his children. Gus’s chicken is a little different each time you try it. It’s got that handmade character – a little of this, a touch of that, a pinch of love, a dash of hot. Once in a while it’ll be so spicy the tears come. Usually, the heat is more gentle, like the touch of an old friend. As Ed Levine wrote for Serious Eats in 2007, “Gus’s Chicken is still perfect, crisp golden-brown on the outside, moist and succulent on the inside, and salted and seasoned with just enough cayenne pepper to let you know it’s there.” Even on the spiciest days, once that signature flavor hits your tongue you know you must finish the crunchy, crispy skin and moist, tender meat. The tears will dry, the tongue will heal. But missing a minute of that soul food tradition? Now that would hurt
Gus's Fried Chicken was recognized in 2009 and 2010 as the 'Best Southern Fried Chicken by Memphis Commercial Appeal and won local awards for it. GQ magazine cited Gus's Fried Chicken as one of the top 5 restaurants worth hopping onto a plane for a meal, back in 2001.

HUEY'S RESTAURANT
When I visit Memphis, and I'm winding down the night and looking for something to eat (especially having a few drinks on Beale Street), one of the first things I want is a burger...don't ask me why, it just seems to just end up that way! There are many places that serves burgers in Memphis and many that are within walking distance from Beale Street ( this is one of the infamous streets everyone hangs out on) and are all good, but one of the places that I am familiar with, is Huey's.
Huey's is located in downtown Memphis, Tn. on 77 S. 2nd St., as well as many other locations. They have several in the Memphis area, as well as Collierville, Tn, Southhaven, MS, Cordova, Tn. and Germantown. But, if you are strolling down Beale Street in Memphis and want the closest Hueys, 77 S. 2nd Street is just a few blocks over.
Huey's serves more than just burgers. They have an enormous menu to choose from ranging from shrimp baskets, Po Boys, catfish baskets, appetizers of all kinds, grilled chicken and chicken tenders as well as their Famous Huey Burgers. The options are endless. This time, I decided to try something a little different. I went with the Shrimp Po Boy. If you're not familiar with what a Po Boy is, it a sandwich that is served on a hoagie bun, topped with shrimp, chicken or other meat. My shrimp po boy came with round disks like shrimp that was deep fried, of course, topped with tomato, lettuce and a side cup of buffalo sauce.
This po boy was almost more than I could eat, but I did manage to get half of it down! I was in Memphis with my son and my husband who both decided to go with the steak sandwich, which consisted of a 7 oz. tenderloin fillet, tomato and lettuce, served on a buttered toasted hoagie bun. They both devoured it! I didn't get to try their steak sandwich, but by the looks of it, they seemed to love it and didn't leave a trace of it behind. My po boy was awesome. The shrimp had just enough of the crispiness from being fried and the buffalo sauce gave it that extra kick that I like in a sandwich.
As my side item...Sweet Potato Waffle Fries. I like that these were served, waffle cut instead of the traditional cut fries.
Huey's is a very popular place among the locals and tourists. We arrived right at opening time, 11:00 am and before we left, there was not an empty seat in the restaurant. It seemed like everyone was taking advantage of the alcoholic drinks that were on special, which included the Bloody Mary, Mimosa and Screwdriver. I, on the other hand, went with the house margarita! It was served in a mason jar with a straw (the mason jar is a Southern thang!) I loved how this drink was served, Southern style!
Oh, and as far as the feel on the inside of Huey's...well...take a look.
Are you wondering what those little prickly things are on the ceiling? Well, this is a thing that every local (or tourist) tries their hand at...or should I say mouth? These are toothpicks, the ones that come in your burger or sandwich. You take the toothpick, place it in your drinking straw and shoot it up toward the ceiling by blowing the toothpick up toward the ceiling...hoping it sticks. Needless to say, I didn't quite make it half way!If you want to get a feel of what Huey's has to offer, go visit their site at https://hueyburger.com I think there is something to please just about everyone. I had a hard time choosing, because there are so many wonderful choices on this menu.

HOPS AND BARLEY RESTAURANT
I love my burgers! As a matter of fact, if I see a burger on a menu that is unique, different and meaty...I'm going to order it! I don't know what it is about all these variety of burgers that appeal to me, but I do know one thing, the thicker and meatier they are, the more I love them! I love a burger that is thick, has tons of toppings to choose from and something I've either never heard of, or is totally unique.
Look at this bad boy here! This burger is the Buffalo Chicken Burger, served by Hops and Barley. When this burger was brought to my table and I first laid my eyes upon it, my first thought was, "How in the world am I going to eat this!"
Then it dawned on me...there was reason behind the fork and knife that was on my table. I literally had to hold the burger, while taking a knife down this burger. It was that thick! To make this burger even better, it was served with a generous heaping of buffalo chicken dip (shredded chicken in buffalo sauce, and I'm guessing with a little cheese mixed into that). This buffalo chicken dip was the bomb! It had just a little bit of kick, with the meatiness of the shredded chicken and a hint of cheese flavor. What more could you ask from a burger?
Not only was the buffalo chicken dip served on this burger, but you also had a regular beef burger as well! This was truly a different and unique burger and I was told by our waitress, Kristy, that Megan, one of the owners of Hops and Barley, specifically made my burger. Thanks Megan! The bun reminded me of a croissant like bun, with a lightness to it and it complimented the burger well.
As an appetizer, I chose the fried pickles, with my side item, the beer battered onion rings. I'm a sucker for fried pickles (it's a southern thang!) and these were fried to perfection. They were lightly battered and had just the right amount of seasoning to them....I tend to over salt mine. Even my husband loved them and he doesn't normally eat fried pickles! The onion rings were home made and you could tell that they were not store bought. For me, I have a hard time frying onion rings without them being too oily or not having that crunch. These onion rings were neither! The had a surprising crunch to them, that I really love and look for in onion rings. They were not greasy or oily and I ate every single one...with a little help!
My husband chose the 8 oz. Flat Iron Steak, baked beans and steak fries. Before I could even get a picture of his steak, he has already cut into it and took several bites! Although I did not take a bite of his steak (how could I, I was busting at the seams after my burger), he said that his steak was cooked perfectly well done! He did not leave even a single bite on his plate. The food was very filling and when Kristy asked if we wanted dessert, we both had to decline. There was no way, by any means, I as able to eat another bite. I was stuffed!
Our waitress, Kristy, was very knowledgeable about the menu and was very pleasant. She even made several trips, to ensure that our food was cooked the way we liked it and to refill our drinks.
Hops and Barley Cafe is a restaurant that has more of a pub/bar like feel. I noticed it had at least 4-5 flat screen TV's throughout the restaurant. One of the things I also noticed, that I love, was an old wooden door, that was turned into menu special board...How cool! The restaurant had plenty of seating to hold quite a few people. We arrived early that afternoon, so the place had not started hopping quite yet. Megan said we picked a good time to come, because later on that evening, the place would start to get packed and would be a little more busier.
Hops and Barley is known for their burgers, but as you can see by the menu, they have plenty of other options to choose from. They have an 8 oz. Flat Iron Steak, 12 oz. Ribeye, Pastas and more.
Hops and Barley Cafe is located in Union City, Tennessee. The owners are Megan Hines and Renee Dillion. If you are looking for that unique burger, or just want to try the many appetizers and sandwich options available, you have to check out Hops and Barley in Union City, Tn. You won't be disappointed!

BALLY'S CASINO - TUNICA, MS
It's been quite some time since I've stepped foot inside a casino...mainly because I'm not much of a gambler, but because I just can't see myself spending money and not coming out ahead! (that's usually how it is with me!). When we received a promotional card from Bally's last week, to offer us $150 dollars worth in chips/tokens plus a free buffet for two people...Well, I was definitely all Gung ho for it!
Bally's is a casino that is actually located in Robisonville, MS. Most of the casinos, including Bally's, is know to be part of Tunica, a well known place in Tennessee for their casinos. Bally's is nothing fancy on the outside, it looks like you are about to step inside a long barn like building, kind of rustic on the outside, but full of lights, machines and action on the inside.
The first place we stopped at, inside of Bally's, was Katt's Kitchen. Katt's Kitchen is a nice restaurant, located just inside the front doors of the casino. There, we noticed a long buffet of food, more than anyone can eat. They had everything from Southern cooked foods, to crab legs and oysters. And let me tell you about the oysters. I have tried oysters before, on more than one occasion, and I DID NOT like them! I did not like the gritty, chewy...almost choke on them, texture. (Ok, so I did not know you weren't suppose to chew them!). But these at Katt's Kitchen...OH MY! They were warm and full of flavor. They were tender and had a little spice to them. They were actually pretty good and it was the first time I liked them!
Mixed Berry Pie
They also had a dessert bar as well as a salad bar, but there was no way I could try everything! I did allow myself to have one dessert, mixed berry pie! After dinner, we decided to play some slot machines. The casino wasn't too busy or active, but we were playing kind of early, like 6:30 pm. After coming out $100 a head, we decided to walk away and call it a night. All in all, I was glad to get out of the house, do something different and enjoy myself a bit.
Visit Bally's casino in Tunica, MS for fun and great food. Visit their site, http://www.ballystunica.com/
